Residential College C at Vanderbilt University was one of the most demanding millwork projects ISEC has completed. The design included arched passageways, ceiling trusses, niches, and quatrefoils. To meet the challenge, we used a mix of old-school craftsmanship and modern prefabrication. Many pieces, like the 26-foot trusses, were built and finished offsite to improve quality and reduce time in the field.
ISEC’s VDC team laser scanned the existing conditions to accurately capture the curves and arches of the original building. This precise data allowed us to customize the intricate woodworking in the shop, ensuring a perfect fit during installation. By controlling fabrication conditions and minimizing on-site adjustments, we streamlined the installation process and maintained a high level of finish quality.
The great room, with its circular layout and double-curved niches, exemplifies the complexity and craftsmanship of the work. ISEC’s planning, innovation, and execution helped transform a highly detailed architectural vision into a lasting space that will serve Vanderbilt students for years to come.
