For the Astronomy Discovery Center at Lowell Observatory, ISEC had the honor of bringing the Origins exhibit to life through the installation of a stunning suspended atom sculpture and intricate 3D landforms. The atom sculpture, suspended 38 feet above the exhibit floor, tells the story of cosmic evolution, from the Big Bang to the emergence of life on Earth. With dynamic lighting and precise engineering, it creates the illusion of a floating, cosmic dance. Below, vivid landforms highlight Earth’s incredible biodiversity, immersing visitors in the beauty and complexity of ecosystems.
The project posed significant technical challenges, particularly managing the 21-foot radius and substantial weight of the atom sculpture. Fiber optic wires, routed through custom-painted ceiling tiles ranging from 15 to 50 feet in length, were meticulously installed to maintain the exhibit’s immersive design. Precise adjustments to the cable lengths during installation ensured the atom sculpture aligned perfectly with the intended vision.
Dillon Works, Inc. was a key collaborator on this project, creating dynamic, immersive elements. The atom sculpture, martian figures, and land rover displays skillfully met aesthetic and thematic goals but also adhered to ISEC’s precise engineering requirements for installation. This project exemplifies ISEC’s dedication to innovation, precision, and effective partnerships, transforming the Astronomy Discovery Center into an awe-inspiring space where science and storytelling merge seamlessly.
